I can't believe it came out in 2001. I have a doctorate degree right now and it came out when I was in high school. Unbelievable how it stays so fresh for so long. Trying to compare it with the stuff you hear on top 40 radio stations is an exercise in futility. So much more emotion and complexity. I have probably listened to the entire album thousands of times....never once getting stale. What are your favorite tracks? Estremoz...Nineveh....Nara....Pompeii....I really can't pick a favorite.

My favourite would have to be Nara, closely followed by the choral vocals of Antissa.

Nineveh for sure.

I honestly think that Nineveh is possibly the most badass use of string instruments in the history of mankind. The cello players probably had the time of their life. Something about violins, cellos, base, electric guitar all jamming together at breakneck speed with some nice percussion in the background....just incredible stuff. I seriously put it up there with Barber's Adagio and Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Estremoz is definitely the most beautiful song on the CD though, IMO. The Spanish guitar...haha. But, man, when it starts to pick up around the 3:00 mark...I just have to shut my eyes and listen....

I like Estremoz but I think I prefer Lepcis Magna to it. Ulaid is my least favorite song and I usually skip that track when I listen to the CD. It's the only song I don't really care for but eh... that's just me. I've tried to like bag pipes, but can't...

They managed to actually fit in instruments and get a general feel for the region in which the song was about. Look up each ancient city and where it is located...then compare the sound to the region it's in. Nothing says "giant ass volcano destroying a huge, populous city" like Pompeii, now does it? I just wish they made a song with Appalachian instrumentation. I want some fiddles and electric guitars.....it's the West Virginian in me.
